17.10.11 Giorgio Faletti

Giorgio Faletti is a writer, singer-songwriter, actor and cabaret performer. He first found success with his comic characters in 1970s at the Derby in Milan, which were then reprised on historic TV programmes such as Pronto Raffaella and Drive In – where he launched his traffic warden character Vito Catozzo. Soon after, he felt the need to explore other areas, so in the 1990s he went into music, releasing a few albums and making several appearances at the San Remo song festival, where he received the critic's award and second overall rating in 1994 with, Minchia signor tenente.

In 1998 he was an actor in the TV series Colletti Bianchi, and at the dawn of the new century he indulged his passion for literature and began work on his first novel, the thriller I Kill, published in 2002: it was a sensational success, selling more than three and a half million copies and putting Faletti squarely on the Italian and international publishing map. Two years later the writer, born in Asti in 1950, released his second work of fiction, Niente di vero tranne gli occhi, which confirmed his talent and led him to his 2006 receipt of the premio De Sica for literature, presented by the President of the Republic. In the meantime Faletti returned to film acting, giving a certain depth to gruff schoolteacher Martinelli in the comedy Notte prima degli esami, by Fausto Brizzi. The film was a box office hit and Faletti's performance drew praise. The year after, he appeared in Il segreto di Rahil, an Italo-Arab film that was admired in many festivals but didn't get an Italian distribution. Faletti was however seen in Italian cinemas that year in Notte prima degli esami – Oggi, the sequel to Brizzi's film.

His played first screen “baddie” the year after in the role of ‘Primario', a gangster who hassles Nicolas Vaporidis in Cemento Armato. In 2010 Giuseppe Tornatore invited him to join the ensemble cast of Baaria, playing the part of Corteccia, a Communist from northern Italy who arrives to open a branch of the PCI in the village. 2011 saw him in the TV film Il sorteggio
by Giacomo Campiotti, a story based on the famous trial of the first Red Brigade cell in 1977.
There was no let up in Faletti's literary output: 2007 saw the release of Fuori da un evidente destino, set in Arizona, while Io sono Dio appeared in 2009. His last novel release was Appunti di un venditore di donne, in 2010. His books have been translated into 25 languages and published in all countries in Europe, as well as South America, China, Japan, Russia and from 2007, the USA and English speaking countries.
