Closely linked with the workers' movement and the Solidarnosc trade unions, Father Popieluszko was kidnapped, tortured and murdered by the Soviet secret services. However his sacrifice and death seemed to be necessary for the people of Poland, who from that point on, lost their fear of fighting for their freedom.
