While travelling on a holiday, Andrzej and Krystyna almost run over a hitchhiker and decide to give him a lift. Andrzej then invites him onto the sailboat on the lake where they will spend their holiday. Krystyna's husband is aggressive and overbearing towards the newcomer. He continues to provoke the stranger, who grabs up a knife as they quarrel. The young man falls into the water and after a while the couple reckon he is missing. They discuss what they should do. Andrzej goes off and the stranger reappears on the boat while Krystyna is alone. Polanski's film won international acclaim from audiences and critics and was nominated for an Oscar as best foreign film. A year later, the American writer Charles Williams published the novel Woman in Love, on which Philip Noyce based his 1989 film Dead Calm with Nicole Kidman. The novel and film seem to borrow from Polanski's film – regarding the combination of a married couple and a stranger – but with more extreme events.
