Pupi Avati

Type:
Born in Bologna on 3 November 1938. One of the undisputed masters of Italian cinema. Director, producer and writer. He began his career as a director in the horror genre with a couple of hard-to-find films shot at the end of the Sixties Blood Relations and Thomas – Gli indemoniati. He has his first chance to emerge with a film starring Ugo Tognazzi and Paolo Villaggio, The Mazurka of the Baron, the Saint and the Early Fig Tree in 1975. The following year he shoots one of the most important cult of the horror genre, The House of the Laughing Windows, through the psychology of the characters of a village that are surrounded by fear and superstition. From 1978 he began a very qualitative relationship with the Italian TV and in addition to three successful series, Jazz Band, Cinema! and Dancing Paradise from 2013 to 2017 shoots some of his most incisive films (from The Bad Child to Il fulgore di Dony). In 1979 Le Strelle nel fosso a coraugeous fairy-tale doesn’t receive the right reception. In the Eighties he finally received the unanimous consent of the great author of the cinema and his immediately recognizable style. The naturalness of acting and the poetry of images and dialogues are the fixed point. After another cult horror, Revenge of the dead, an important phase of his cinematographic career begins, about the memory (moreover started with the series on TV and with Help me dream also made for television). A School Outing, We Three and Graduation Party are the first examples followed by The Story of Boys and Girls, Brothers and Sisters, Declarations of Love and many other films that will lead the way for many other directors. Avati, however, does not fail to denounce or emphasize aspects of society that are sometimes cruel and mean. This is the case with Christmas Present, The Last Minute and Employees. His passion for jazz returns in the 90s with the film shot in the United States, Bix, dedicated to Bix Beiderbecke. Magnificat is also a beautiful film, screened in competition at Cannes Festival in 1993 and The Best Man presented at Berlinale is nominated for a Golden Globes in 1998. It is difficult to talk about all the 40 films of a beautiful career for which we will limit ourselves to citing again some titles of the 2000s, The Heart is Elsewhere ', The Second Wedding Night and Giovanna’s Father. In 2019 he returns to the horror genre, giving him once again luster with Mr. Devil 12 years after his last film of the genre, The Hideout and a 23 from another cult, The Mysterious Enchanter.
