Anka's mother died shortly after her birth. She has since lived with her father Michal in Warsaw. One day Anka finds a letter written by her mother before her death, to be read by Anka only after the death of her father. This, along with a photograph of her mother in the company of other men, disturbs the girl greatly. She does not however open the letter but instead tells Michal she has, and that she now knows that he is not her real father: they thus feel free to confess their own real and repressed feelings.

After an unpleasant and humiliating scene for both of them, Roman forgives Hanka. She promises not to lie to him again.

After his arrest, Jacek's defence is handled by Piotr, a young lawyer who is intent on avoiding a death sentence. But the circumstances of the crime, together with the ferocity of the act, allow no clemency for Jacek. The brutality of that killing is matched by the excess of a death by hanging, painstakingly prepared and carried out by its executors.

He finally declares himself; the woman admits him to her home but his attempt to make love to her ends in failure. Humiliated, the desperate youth tries to commit suicide and then disappears.
